Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the toenails and fingernails that results in thickening, discoloration, and splitting of the nails. It can also cause the lifting of the nail from the nail bed.

This infection is caused by different species including Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Candida sp., and Aspergilus niger.

There are a few nail treatments options available including topical and oral medication but none of these treatments provide a lasting cure.
